UnitedHealthcare Promotes New Pharmacy Programs

In an effort to help members maximize their prescription medication benefits, UnitedHealth Pharmaceutical Solutions (UHPS) is promoting two new pharmacy programs to its fully-insured members.

The first program is the 2007 Half Tablet consumer campaign, which offers members a reduced copayment on certain higher-dosage medications and then allows for splitting the pills into half-doses. Members with recent claims for medications suitable for the program will receive information on how the program works and how to obtain a free pill splitter. Employers are encouraged to help promote this program, and further communication materials are available for this purpose.

Half Tablet program participants should note that the Valtrex® antiviral will no longer be promoted as an eligible medication effective immediately, although members currently splitting the medication will not experience any disruption.

The second pharmacy program UHPS is promoting to fully-insured members is a consumer campaign focusing on lower cost medications. This program educates members who are taking Tier 3 medication about the high-value, lower cost Tier 1 alternatives available to them. Through the program, medications within nine classes will be targeted including: anti-depressants, diabetes/insulin, sleep agents and topical anti-inflammatory steroidals. Members with recent prescription claims within these categories will receive a letter notifying them of at least one lower cost alternative.

Should you have any questions regarding either of these programs, or if you would like to learn more about the promotional materials available, please contact our office at 919-403-1986.
