UnitedHealthcare Announces Specialty Pharmacy Transition for Treatment of Certain Conditions

Effective October 1, 2008, UnitedHealthcare will require covered employees needing specialty prescriptions for anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia prevention and Hepatitis C to refill using their new specialty pharmacy provider, Prescription Solutions, in order to receive network prescription benefit coverage.

Employees currently filling specialty medications for anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia prevention at McKesson will be notified by mail in September informing them about the transition. In addition, the affected employees will receive a call from UHC explaining the program and assisting them in transferring their prescriptions to Prescription Solutions.

Hepatitis C patients currently using OptionCare and McKesson may continue to receive coverage at these pharmacies through June 30, 2009, to finish the course of their treatment. These members will not be included in the September mailing.

New Hepatitis C patients as of March 2008 that have been filling prescriptions at a non-designated pharmacy have been receiving overrides to remain at these pharmacies until the transition to Prescription Solutions. These members have already been notified of the transition by mail, and they also will receive a call in September with further explanation.

If an employee submits a new prescription for a specialty medication at a pharmacy that is not in the UnitedHealthcare Specialty Pharmacy Network, the claim system will send a point-of-sale message to the dispensing pharmacist. The message will indicate a non-network pharmacy status and provide the toll-free number to the Specialty Pharmacy Referral Line, which can help direct members to Prescription Solutions or the appropriate designated specialty pharmacy.

If you have any questions concerning this transition, please contact our office at 919-403-1986.
