BCBSNC Student Verification Deadline is October 19

Employers are encouraged to remind their employees who have full-time students as dependents on the Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC medical plan that verification of full-time student status must be received by BCBSNC by October 19, 2007. Proper verification will ensure that these dependents are not automatically terminated from the plan.

If an employee has a dependent that is above the age of 19 and is no longer a full-time student, the employee is required to notify BCBSNC to drop this person from coverage. If this dependent is out of school and cannot be covered under an employer’s insurance plan, COBRA coverage can be purchased. The employee must notify human resources of this qualifying event.

BCBSNC has already mailed student recertification letters to approximately 33,000 subscribers who have dependents between the ages of 19 and 26. If the subscriber does not return the letter by October 19, BCBSNC will assume the dependent is no longer a student, and will therefore be terminated from coverage effective Sept. 30, 2007.
