BCBSNC Clarifies Updates to Blue Points Program, Acid Reflux Drug Requirement and Medication Dedication Discontinuation

Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC recently communicated several program updates for member groups, including update clarifications on the Blue Points program, the new requirement for acid reflux medications, and the discontinuation of the popular Medication Dedication program. The following is a brief summary of these updates for your convenience.

Blue Points Taxation Updates
In September, BCBSNC notified groups of some important changes to the Blue Points program for 2010. However, some of the statements made in the carrier’s communication to groups about these changes were found to be incorrect or needing further clarification. Most importantly, the taxation reporting changes are effective November 9, 2009, rather than January 1, 2010. A complete summary of the corrections can be found here, while an updated frequently-asked-questions communication can be found here.

Acid Reflux Drug Requirement Update
As detailed in the Benefits Bulletin dated September 3, 2009, BCBSNC announced changes to the review/certification program regarding proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) used to treat acid reflux or heartburn. The new requirement specified that new users of non-preferred PPIs (such as Prevacid or Zegerid) would need to try two of the preferred PPI options (omeprazole, pantoprazole, or Nexium) before the non-preferred drug would be covered. However, after further consideration, BCBSNC will leave the current program unchanged, and affected members will only have to try ONE of the preferred PPI options before coverage.

Medication Dedication Discontinuation
BCBSNC’s popular copayment waiver program, Medication Dedication, will officially come to an end on December 31, 2009, for all fully insured participant groups. However, any ASO (self-funded) groups that wish to continue the program may do so on an opt-in basis, but only if they contact BCBSNC prior to Dec. 31.
