BCBSNC Members Can Verify Dependent Social Security Numbers Online

In order to comply with recent federal mandates on reporting of plan participant information, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC must report dependent Social Security numbers (SSNs) of all plan participants as detailed in the Compliance Alert dated November 25, 2008. As a result, BCBSNC group customers must report all dependent SSNs to BCBSNC by January 1, 2010. To ease the reporting process, BCBSNC members who use EBenefitsnow.com can verify dependent information to find which SSNs must be reported.

Clients who use EBenefitsnow.com should use the following instructions to obtain a list of covered dependents and to determine which dependents’ SSNs are not on file with BCBSNC:


  1. Login to EBenefitsnow.com
  2. Select “Reports” tab at the top of the page
  3. Select “Create Reports” tab, and find the section labeled “Census Reports”
  4. Select “Dependent Census”
  5. Under Formatting Options section, select the following for each field:
    1. Report Format: Excel Compatible (CSV)
    2. Group by: (Select how you would like to group information; i.e. Location, etc.)
    3. Sort by: Employee Last Name, First Name
  6. Under Filtering Options section, select the following for each field:
    1. Dependent Relationship: Select “ALL”
  7. Under Location Options section, select which location you would like to include in the report, or select “ALL”
  8. Once fields are selected, click on “Create Report” at the bottom of page to go to the “View Results” page
  9. Upon arriving at the “View Results” page, the report will show as pending – click on “Refresh Pending” button until report is ready to download
  10. Click on “Download” to view report
  11. If the dependent does not have a SSN entered in the BCBSNC system, no SSN will be listed in the SSN column in Excel Report

Once the needed SSNs are identified, groups may submit this information to BCBSNC in the same manner they submit other eligibility information. Should you have any questions regarding this new requirement, please contact our office at 919-403-1986.
