BCBSNC Verifying Dependent Social Security Numbers through Mail

In an effort to comply with recent federal mandates on reporting of plan participant information, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC is obtaining and verifying Social Security numbers (SSNs) of dependent plan participants over the age of 45, as well as those with Medicare coverage, through an aggressive mailing campaign that began May 25. Over 58,000 member dependents will be receiving a letter from BCBSNC asking them to verify their SSN and instructing them on how to follow through with the verification process.

The letter explains the need for collection of the SSN and displays the last four digits of the dependent member’s SSN for verification. If the four digits do not match those of the member’s SSN, they are instructed to contact BCBSNC’s SSN data capture team via telephone. If BCBSNC does not receive any communication from the member by June 11, 2009, they will assume the SSN they have on file is correct and no further action is necessary.

Should you have any questions regarding this mailing, please contact our office at 919-403-1986.
