WellPath Announces Pharmacy Transition, Network Changes and Green Initiatives

WellPath recently announced several changes that will affect their employer clients, including a new pharmacy benefit administrator, changes to the WellPath physician network, and new environment-friendly initiatives. The following is a brief summary of these updates:

Medco to Administer Pharmacy Benefits
Effective January 1, 2010, Medco will become WellPath’s new pharmacy benefit administrator. Medco is one of the largest pharmacy benefit providers in the U.S., and their mail-order services consistently rank among the best in the industry.

Some Raleigh-Area Physicians Leave WellPath Network
As of August 1, 2009, the physicians affiliated with both the Raleigh Surgical Group, Inc., and Wake Surgical Center, Inc., have dissolved their independent practices and, as a result, are no longer participating in the WellPath Network. Even though most of these physicians are now employed by Rex Healthcare, WellPath still needs an updated agreement with Rex Healthcare to reinstate the physicians’ participation status. Until an agreement is reached, these providers will be considered “non-participating”. In the meantime, WellPath members will continue to have access to over 40 participating general surgeons in Wake County.

WellPath Going Green
In an effort to become more environmentally-responsible, WellPath is offering electronic member materials through “e-kits”. These electronic materials not only eliminate the need to maintain bulky paper files, but will also allow members access to up-to-date critical information, such as online provider directories, faster than ever before.
