BCBSNC Expands Coverage to Include 3D Mammography

April 20, 2017

Effective June 1, 2017, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) will expand coverage to include digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography. As a result, 3D mammography services received on or after the effective date will be a covered service for all BCBSNC members.

Scientific research suggests that both 3D mammography and 2D mammography can be effective in the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer. BCBSNC is making this change to keep up with evolving technology and meet market demands.

The cost of 3D mammography is approximately 50% higher than the cost of 2D mammography. 3D mammography services will be covered similarly to the way BCBSNC covers 2D mammography. Members’ costs for these services will vary, based on their benefit plan. For health plans that cover preventive services at 100%, 3D mammography screening services will be covered at no member cost. Members should refer to their benefit booklet for details.
